The Poverty Draft

DCrowe over at Return Good has an excellent post today about the poverty draft - that, in effect, poor economic conditions force young kids to join the military. DCrowe writes from a Christian, nonviolent point of view, but regardless of your religious views it’s a great read.

No one should think that military enlistment - effectively agreeing to kill people for their government - is the only option in life.

Check it out. It’s a great post.

Why does still-President Bush hate America?

Yesterday, still-President George W Bush pardoned a man who poisoned three bald eagles.

According to the AP, Leslie Owen Collier

pleaded guilty in 1995 to unlawfully killing three bald eagles in southeast Missouri. He improperly used pesticide in hamburger meat to kill coyotes, but ended up killing many other animals, including the bald eagles. Collier, who was convicted for unauthorized use of a pesticide and violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, was sentenced Feb. 2, 1996, in the Eastern District of Missouri.

Ok, so a Democrat gets ganged up on for not wearing a lapel pin depicting the American Flag, but this dude can kill the symbol of American freedom and be pardoned? Man, our still-President must really hate America.

Ohhhhhhhh, I get it. Collier is from Southeastern Missouri, which I’ve heard is in the Pro-America part of the country, so it balances out the accidental poisoning.  Carry on, then.

Colmes leaves Hannity

The dashing Alan Colmes

The dashing Alan Colmes

After 12 years of being Sean Hannity’s punching bag better half, Alan Colmes is leaving for greener pastures.

Alan Colmes of the network’s “Hannity & Colmes” said on his Web site Monday that he’ll be leaving the prime-time show after 12 years. He said he approached a network executive earlier this year about doing something else.

Colmes will continue as a liberal commentator on Fox programs, keep doing his own radio show and is developing a weekend show at Fox News.

Well, that’s a relief. If Colmes were to leave the network altogether, its sterling reputation as being Fair and Balanced ™ might be in question. Someone might get the wrong idea about the network, and accuse it of being a mouthpiece for the Republican Party. Thank goodness the ever stalwart and brave Colmes is there to maintain neutrality.

Long-haired hippie people need not apply

Switzerland has taken the bold move of disallowing vegans and thin people from serving in its army.

THIN people and vegans are being allowed to dodge national conscription by the Swiss army – but it will take users of cannabis and Ecstasy.

Under rules issued this week, people cannot serve if they eat no animal products or if they are of average height and weigh less than 8st.

Conscripts who smoke marijuana, take Ecstasy or drink regularly will be allowed in if they can prove they are not addicted.

Wait, Switzerland actually has an army? I mean, I’ve heard of them but I thought they just made watches and knives.

Anyway, since the article about this is really short & gives no indication of Switzerland’s motivations, I think a little bit of irresponsible speculation is in order.

Theory #1: Switzerland doesn’t trust vegans to be aggressive enough to take up arms against people. Hell, if they can’t bring themselves to eat shrimp, or eggs, or honey, which are harvested by other nameless people, how could they possibly shoot a semi-sentient being like a human, in person?

Theory #2: Switzerland doesn’t trust vegans to be robust enough to fight in a war. When the hordes of French platoons invade (stop laughing) or Germany threatens to take the country, the vegans will be too listless and weak to make a stand against them. Their protein-deprived muscles will have atrophied into string beans, and they won’t even be able to hold up their guns. This constitutes a clear and present danger to Switzerland’s national security.

Theory #3: Switzerland thinks vegans in the army are bad for morale, what with all their smug self-satisfaction and the judgment they pass on the meat-mouths. A vegan might not follow orders from a sergeant who eats meat because of his clearly flawed moral and decision calculus. A vegan officer might even command her soldiers not to eat animal products, which could result in mutiny.  It would be anarchy in the arena, tyranny in the trenches, a bitter breakdown on the battlefield.

Snoop: Obama needs to be the Commander-in-Chef

Snoop Dogg has some advice for the President-Elect on fatherhood:

He says, “Mr. President needs to learn how to bake a cake. That’s points for the man of the house - because I did that. I bake cakes and popcorn and cotton candy…

“Then they like for you to get out of their face and let them be kids.”

Points for the man of the house? I’d think after the big White House and the new puppy he’d be sitting pretty, but I guess it’s always good to accrue political capital.
